HISTORY OF BOOMER’S PRINTING CO.

Boomer’s Printing Company, a full-service commercial printer and mailer, has been in business for more than 90 years. The company’s long history began when Mrs. Grace Boomer established an employment agency for teachers at the end of World War I. In March, 1919, Grace and her employees were preparing a large mailing of teacher resumes. The deadline for the mailing was approaching, but the printer had not yet delivered the resumes. Grace soon discovered that the printer had shut its doors and gone out of business. Faced with an urgent need to get the job done, Grace purchased the printing press and hired the press operator. While printing the resumes, Grace and her employees discovered a large backlog of pending print jobs that had not been completed, and Boomer’s Printing Company was born.

Grace’s son Lowell began working for Boomer’s while in junior high school, and in 1931 took over the company from his mother. Lowell served as president of the company for 70 years. During that period Boomer’s expanded to become one of the largest commercial printing companies in Nebraska, as well as a pioneer in local instant printing and a forerunner in direct-mail fundraising for charitable organizations. A major client was Cliffs Notes, whose study guides were printed by Boomer’s from their creation in 1958 until the company was sold 40 years later.

In May of 2001, Lowell Boomer officially retired from the business and sold his controlling interest to Harold Klein, long-time vice-president and general manager, and his wife, Sharon. In 2008, Capital Graphics and Cornhusker printing merged with Boomer’s Printing.

The merger with Cornerstone Printing & Imaging in December 2010 helped ensure that the legacy created by the Boomer’s family will stay intact –and thrive–long into the future.
